Final approval has been given to the European Electronic Communications Code (“EECC“) by the European Parliament.
The EECC is a proposed EU Directive which aims to update and consolidate telecoms regulation under EU law, and is designed to support the rollout of full fibre networks, and 5G.
It also increases consumer protection by extending rules to Over-The-Top services, and introducing a cap on the cost of intra-EU calls and texts, This cap would be effective from 15 May 2019.
The EECC now requires formal approval by the EU Council, and publication in the official journal before it takes effect and Member States will have two years to incorporate the new rules into their regulatory regimes.
Please contact Tim Cowen or Jose Saras if you have any questions regarding the EECC.
