Google fined record-breaking €2.42 billion by European Commission

June 27, 2017By Preiskel & Co

Following a seven-year investigation into Google’s Shopping service, the European Commission has today announced a €2.42 billion fine against Google.

The Commission has found that Google breached EU antitrust rules by using its market dominance as a search engine to give its Shopping service an illegal advantage.

The Commission has ordered that Google end this practice within 90 days, or it will face penalty payments of up to 5% of its parent company Alphabet’s daily worldwide turnover.

With this announcement comes the possibility of follow-on damages cases from those who have been affected by Google’s practices. Preiskel & Co have advised a number of clients in relation to the Commission’s investigation.

Any questions regarding follow-on claims or the Commission’s ongoing investigations in Android and Search Advertising should be directed to Tim Cowen.

You can read the Commission’s press release here.
