October 8, 2012By Preiskel & Co

Preiskel & Co Prize Essay Competition 2012-2013

Preiskel & Co has established an IT Essay Prize at the London University LLM (Queen Mary College).  The first prize will be for the best essay submitted on the topic of “The protection of open-source based unique software solutions”.

CCLS, School of Law, Queen Mary University of London

Topic: The protection of open-source based unique software solutions

According to recent statistics, around 35% of software is open-source based. However, there is a question mark over IP ownership of open-source based software and the purpose of this essay competition is to tease out the issues and develop a strategy for open source software developers.

The aim of the Essay Competition is to encourage a number of LLM students to write a well-researched, in-depth analysis of a current topic with practical application.  The essays will be assessed on the strength of the analysis, the examination of all relevant resources and secondary materials and a coherent structure, a clear outcome of the research and practical application.  As well as analysing the law, students are expected to research and analyse the relevant IT aspects and applications.  A comparative law analysis of the jurisprudence is required.

Students should write an essay worthy of publication, fully referenced and footnoted of about 5000-7000 words. The Essay Competition is open to LLM students, Students of the Distance Learning Programme in Computer & Communications Law and PhD students.

Submission of essays are to be by 28 February 2013 and announcement of the Preiskel & Co Essay Prize winner will be in March 2013.  There will be an evening lecture and drinks in March 2013 for announcing the winner and runners-up.
